Chinese Academy of Sciences develops bio-based epoxy resin

China Drying Network News Recently, the Bio-based Polymer Materials Research Group of the Ningbo Materials Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences synthesized a bio-based epoxy resin based on itaconic acid starting materials. The resin has a low viscosity at room temperature and an epoxy value of more than 0.62. The synthesis process is simple. After curing, the performance indexes are equal to or better than those of existing petroleum-based epoxy resins with similar structures, and they are inexpensive and have a good application prospect.

It is understood that itaconic acid, also known as methylene succinic acid, is an important bio-based raw material that can be prepared by biological fermentation techniques. Due to its broad application prospects and low prices, the resin has been selected by the US Department of Energy as one of the 12 bio-based platform compounds with the most market potential.

Bio-based polymer materials are an important development direction of current polymer materials, and have important practical value and broad space for development. At present, research on bio-based plastics is mainly limited to natural polymers or thermoplastics such as starch plastics, cellulose-based materials, polylactic acid (PLA), poly-3-hydroxybutyrate/3-hydroxyvalerate copolymer (PHBV), etc. Materials, thermoset bio-based resins are relatively rare.
