The caustic soda industry's booming growth momentum continues unabated

The reporter learned from the 2008 national caustic soda market seminar that ended on April 24. We learned that the caustic soda industry in China has grown rapidly over the past three years: the production capacity has grown from 11.9 million tons in 2004 to 21.81 million tons in 2007. The annual growth rate exceeds 20%. In 3 years, the total production capacity increases by nearly 10 million tons, with an average annual increase of 3.3 million tons. The output increased from 10.6 million tons in 2004 to 17.759 million tons in 2007, an increase of nearly 7 million tons, with an average annual increase. 233 million tons. In 2007, the total output of caustic soda in China exceeded the total output of soda ash for the first time. At present, the development trend of caustic soda is still continuing. According to estimates by China Chlor-Alkali Industry Association, caustic soda will increase by 1.6 million tons in the first half of 2008.
The vigorous development of the caustic soda industry in China is mainly due to the strong growth in demand at home and abroad. In the international crude oil prices rose sharply, the Western countries due to environmental restrictions to shrink production capacity, and the global alumina production capacity expansion and many other factors together, the domestic and international market demand for caustic soda, the market reached a historical high.
At the same time of significant expansion of production capacity, the domestic caustic soda industry pattern presents three characteristics:
Firstly, the product structure has been gradually optimized. Through technical upgrading and other measures, the proportion of ion-exchange membrane caustic soda has rapidly increased. In 2008, the ratio of ion-exchange membrane caustic soda to diaphragm base increased from 56:44 in 2007 to 63:37, and it grew from one-half of the total production to nearly two-thirds of the total production. At the same time, the scale of domestic caustic soda enterprises is also expanding, with an average annual production capacity of 121,200 tons. Of the 180 caustic soda enterprises, 29 have an annual production capacity of more than 200,000 tons, 9 have more than 400,000 tons, and the largest company has an annual production capacity of 780,000 tons of chlor-alkali in Shanghai.
Second, the degree of industrial concentration has increased, and the competitiveness of domestic and foreign markets has increased. Chlor-alkali enterprises have begun to merge. The three companies of China National Chemical Corporation, Bluestar, Suihua, and New Materials, are active in the merger and reorganization of the industry. Currently, the entire company already has a caustic soda production capacity of 950,000 tons/year and will have 200,000 tons of capacity put into operation this year. It is estimated that by 2010, the production of caustic soda products in China will form a base and there will be a number of large-scale enterprises with an annual production capacity of 500,000 to 1 million tons. At present, China's caustic soda enterprises are no less competitive than the domestic caustic soda enterprises in the Gulf of Mexico in the US West Coast market.
Third, the share of caustic soda production capacity in the northwestern region has gradually expanded. From the perspective of development trends, the proportion of caustic soda production capacity in the four provinces of Inner Mongolia, Shaanxi, Ningxia and Xinjiang accounts for the country’s total production capacity, which will increase from 12% in 2008 to 15% in 2009, and then to 18% in 2010. Gradually shift to resources.
