Cummins Cooperates with Dongfeng Motor to Develop 13-liter Heavy Duty Diesel Engine

Dongfeng Company and Cummins signed an agreement in October 2005 to jointly develop a new generation of 13-liter fully electronically controlled heavy-duty truck engines with a power range of 400-545 hp. The target is for high-end heavy truck trucks with a gross vehicle weight of over 40 tons in China. Focus on meeting the needs of the international market. The 13-liter engine project makes full use of Cummins' leading engine technology in the industry to meet the most stringent emission regulations in the global heavy market.

The development of this new type of heavy-duty truck engine has revolutionized the traditional technology and product introduction model of Sino-foreign joint ventures. It was funded by Dongfeng Cummins Engine Co., Ltd., a joint venture between Cummins and Dongfeng Motor Co., Ltd., and was jointly established by the East Asia Research and Development Center. R&D is supported by Cummins Global R&D Network. Dongfeng Cummins Engine Co., Ltd. owns all the independent intellectual property rights of this new engine platform.

The 13-litre engine project utilizes Cummins' leading engine technology in the industry and started from the same time to meet the needs of both Chinese and international markets. With the increasingly stringent global emission regulations, tail gas emissions play a crucial role in the development of diesel engines. The R&D target of the 13-liter engine is positioned to meet both the world’s two core emission regulations – European regulations (Euro 3 and Euro 4 standards). And the US Federal Agency for Environmental Protection (EPA2007 standard), not only that, this new heavy-duty engine platform also has the ability to further upgrade for the European No. 5 and US EPA2010 regulations, is a new generation of diesel engine platform that can sustainably develop.

The 13-liter engine project is Cummins’ first heavy-duty engine platform developed outside the United States for the local and global markets, reflecting the rapid development of the Chinese market in Cummins's global product development strategy and Cummins’s presence in the Chinese market. The long-term commitment of our partners.

For Dongfeng, the 13-liter engine project is the first time in the international development of Dongfeng Motor for more than 20 years. Together with foreign parties, through the Sino-foreign joint ventures to jointly develop a new generation of engine products, it is an independent research and development strategy of Dongfeng Motor. Key progress.

The Cummins heavy-duty truck engine has two series: ISM (11 liter and 11.1 liter) and ISX (15 liter and 16 liter). The 13-liter project fills the gap between the Cummins heavy-duty truck engine and the strong growth of China's heavy truck high-end market in the next few years. The decision to develop this engine platform in China has played a decisive role. At the same time, the 13-liter engine was designed to quickly upgrade to meet the emission requirements of the engine in the international market outside of China.

According to the statistics of Overdrive magazine, the authoritative publication of the US heavy truck market in September 2004, the United States is currently using heavy trucks with 63% of engine power in the 400-50 horsepower range. In contrast, the engine displacement and power of heavy-duty trucks in our country are still relatively low, concentrating around 250 to 300 horsepower, and the displacement is generally in the range of 8-10 liters. Industry experts believe that by 2010, China's heavy-duty truck engines are expected to approach the US heavy-duty truck's power range, with the main displacement rising to the 10-12-liter range and the power rising to 350-450 hp. From this point of view, the ISZ engine project is a heavy-duty engine with long-term product life, taking into account both the international market and the advancement of the domestic market.
