Phosphate fertilizer companies urge government to manage waste sulfuric acid

The reporter recently visited the Soil Fertilizer Station of the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Agriculture. When talking about how to strengthen fertilizer quality control and prevention of fertilizer accidents, the deputy head of the station Chen Hongjin pointed out: In order to reduce production costs, phosphate fertilizer companies use raw sulfuric acid instead of genuine sulfuric acid as raw materials. The phenomenon of production is very common. As the current state of the use of waste sulfuric acid is not strictly limited, the company's quality inspection departments also lack of effective detection methods to analyze and control toxic and hazardous substances in waste sulfuric acid, giving agriculture production safety and ecological security has brought serious problems. In recent years, fertilizer accidents have occurred from time to time and are not unrelated to the widespread use of waste sulfuric acid. Chen Hongjin hopes that this newspaper can pay attention to it and calls on relevant government departments and industry associations to pay close attention to it and seek a proper solution.

According to the reporter, the application of waste sulfuric acid in fertilizer production is mainly used to produce superphosphate, which is one of the main raw materials for low-concentration compound fertilizers. Fertilizer is a meager industry, and the price of waste sulfuric acid is much lower than that of genuine sulfuric acid, which is used to replace genuine sulfuric acid production. From the perspective of reducing costs, the effect is naturally significant, and it is very popular. However, companies are not entirely unconcerned about this, and most companies are very cautious in choosing the source of waste sulfuric acid. Chairman Cao Genxiang of Zhejiang Haiyan Beiyang Phosphorus Materials Co., Ltd. told reporters that all of their waste sulfuric acid was purchased from a local polyester enterprise. The two sides have cooperated for more than 10 years and have never had a chemical fertilizer accident, so they can use it with confidence. At the same time, in order to ensure product quality and safety, the company's use of waste sulfuric acid is also very small.

So, can “Carefully” prevent the harm caused by waste sulfuric acid in the end? the answer is negative. In 2005, the Feiyan brand superphosphate produced by Zhejiang Longyou Feiyan Chemical Co., Ltd. had a serious fertilizer accident, resulting in the damage of more than 20,000 mu of economic crops, causing direct economic losses to farmers by several million yuan. According to the company's internal investigation and analysis at that time, the primary cause of the accident was the use of some of the waste sulfuric acid containing toxic and hazardous substances. Prior to this, the waste sulfuric acid supplier had cooperated with Feiyan for many years, and the quality has been very stable. After the accident, the reputation of the company was severely damaged, and the huge amount of compensation expenses also brought heavy pressure on the production and operation of the company. Soon after, Feiyan brand products disappeared from the market.

Waste sulfuric acid should not be used in fertilizer production in the end? Since the quality cannot be guaranteed and the consequences caused are so serious, why not simply prohibit it? “From the point of view of being completely foolproof, naturally, it is not necessary to be good. But from the current situation, it is neither reasonable nor reasonable to ban it completely.” Zhang Shuren, secretary general of the Phosphate Compound Fertilizer and Sulfuric Acid Branch of the Zhejiang Chemical Fertilizer Industry Association thinks. “First of all, from the perspective of recycling economy, the use of waste sulfuric acid that does not contain toxic and hazardous substances for chemical fertilizer production not only makes rational use of resources, but also effectively reduces the production costs of fertilizer companies. At present, China’s use of waste sulfuric acid is still in short supply. The production of calcium superphosphate is relatively ideal and one of the most important ways. If all use is banned, not only will fertilizer companies increase their costs, but also the destination of large amounts of waste sulfuric acid will become a very difficult problem every year. Second, it must be admitted that not all sources The waste sulfuric acid is not suitable for the production of chemical fertilizers. The key now is that companies lack the standards or regulations that can be used in the quality inspection and source selection of waste sulfuric acid, and they can only rely on their own experience to do so.

In fact, phosphate fertilizer companies also very much hope that the relevant departments will issue a quality standard or regulatory document on the use of waste sulfuric acid in fertilizers. Zhang Shuji from Zhejiang Pinghu Jinbo Chemical Fertilizer Co., Ltd. said: “Any chemical fertilizer company that pays attention to the brand and focuses on the people’s livelihood will not use waste sulfuric acid indiscriminately. After all, the risk is too high. Feiyan Chemicals is a living lesson. But now The problem is that the country has no relevant regulations, and if anyone uses it, we don’t have to suffer losses, what can be used, what cannot be used, and how it should be used. We hope that the state will regulate the use of waste sulfuric acid and let us use it. It is safe to get up and it can also effectively prevent some fatal injuries."

In this regard, according to Shang Zhaocong, the National Fertilizer Quality Supervision and Inspection Center and Deputy Director of the Fertilizer Examination Department of the National Industrial Product Licensing Office, “The source of waste sulfuric acid is various and the composition is very complex. If it is used, it is not regulated and restricted. There are indeed many hidden dangers, and the resulting accidents have also occurred from time to time across the country. The National Fertilizer Quality Supervision and Inspection Center has always attached great importance to this, and is also actively looking for ways to properly solve it, especially for heavy metals in chemical fertilizers. We have set relatively strict standards for the strict control of the content, but it is difficult to come up with a scientific approach from the current situation as to how to prevent the introduction of toxic and hazardous substances from waste sulfuric acid. Now we can only remind and require companies to consider for the sake of their own long-term interests, not to use waste sulfuric acid with unclear substances and unqualified quality, use genuine sulfuric acid as much as possible, and expect to have more and better Waste sulfuric acid treatment technology emerged."
