Qualcomm in Shanghai MWC: 5G and Internet of Things leader

As an annual event in the field of mobile communications, each session of MWC Mobile World Congress brings us new technologies and new developments in mobile communication technology. June 29 this year to July 1, we ushered in the 2016 MWC Shanghai Mobile World Congress, the focus of this conference to discuss is yet to come yet imagined a huge space 5G. Qualcomm, a leader in mobile communications, shared with us their new advances in 5G connectivity technology.

In the industry view, 5G connectivity technology is considered an indispensable part of the future vision of all things connected. From 2G, 3G to 4G, users have directly sensed the changes brought about by the progress of connection technology. Before the advent of 5G, the imagination of smart living is even more exciting.

Qualcomm Advanced Connectivity Technology Communications

To promote 5G in the global development process

Qualcomm's vision for 5G is to create a unified connectivity architecture that supports a wide range of use cases and deployment scenarios by driving a unified design for all spectrum types and bands from below 1GHz to millimeter waves. Qualcomm senior vice president and chief operating officer of Greater China, Roger Fu at the Advanced Connectivity Technology Conference introduced Qualcomm company has already started to invest heavily in 5G R & D, has now invested a total of 40 billion US dollars for 5G connection Technology research and development.

In the development of 5G platform, the evolution of LTE will be the key. LTE-A connectivity has been implemented in many areas at present, and technologies such as carrier aggregation and MIMO technologies have also been applied on Qualcomm mobile chip processors. On this basis, the LTE connection technology is further upgraded to LTE Advanced Pro, and the uplink rate can reach the gigabit level. At this level, Qualcomm is making great efforts to develop shared spectrum (LAA, LSA), end-to-end connection technology, and narrowband Internet of Things Technical realization.

Qualcomm's state-of-the-art X16 LTE is a gigabit LTE Advanced Pro modem that supports up to 1Gbps downstream (Cat.16) and up to 150Mbps upstream (Cat.13) while supporting the new 3GPP frequency band - 3.5 GHz band. At present, this modem has been sampling, the commercial terminal is expected to market in the second half of this year.

What needs to be mentioned is that Qualcomm supports all spectrum types and frequency bands in 5G connection technology design. Offering support for longer reach and massive Internet of Things in the 1GHz and below bands; 1GHz to 6GHz bands for broader bandwidth for enhanced mobile broadband and business-critical services such as robotics, automotive and healthcare; and 6GHz and above (eg, millimeter Wave) is for the ultimate mobile broadband scenarios and applications. Qualcomm also unveiled a joint venture with China Mobile to launch the 5G new air interface prototype system and test platform under 6GHz and bring the showcase to the MWC Shanghai event.

Dr. Hou Ji Lei, head of research and development center of Qualcomm China, said at the communication conference that the road of 5G is the key to move from standardization to commercialization. Qualcomm will contribute to the 3GPP standard from 5G designs, the introduction of Pre-5G commercial chipsets to co-operators for 6GHz millimeter-wave testing, and more. Qualcomm expects to complete a 5G commercial release by 2020.

IoT LTE technology for the Internet of Things

Another issue Qualcomm Shanghai MWC for the Internet of Things, that is, IoT (Internet of Things) is often mentioned. It is estimated that by 2025, the global Internet of Things connected terminals will reach 5 billion. And at this stage, Qualcomm thinks 4G LTE based on wireless cellular technology will bring the best connection experience for the Internet of Things. Cellular technology will be able to support a very wide range of IoT services such as smart transportation, smart city, mobile health, environmental monitoring, networking industry and more.

Recently Qualcomm announced the MDO9x07, an LTE IoT modem for the Internet of Things (IoT) with low cost and low power consumption. This family includes the Qualcomm Snapdragon X5 LTE (9x07) modem and the Internet of Things (IoT) MDM9207-1 modem. It is understood that there are already more than 60 manufacturers to provide more than 100 design, the formation of the IoT ecosystem is a good help.

The Internet of Things (LTE) evolution will evolve from the current performance-and-mobility (LTE) connectivity to narrowband IoT technology by which time IoT technology will focus more on reducing the complexity, cost, and power consumption of device connectivity to Qualcomm's The LTE network will be upgraded from LTE Cat-4 to LTE Cat-M1 (eMTC) to Cat-NB1 (NB-IoT), and the latter two will have better IoT functions. The LTE Cat-M1 With support for voice / VoLTE calls, the NB-IoT reduces cost and power consumption to a minimum in low-throughput applications.

As a result, Qualcomm has achieved industry-leading positions in mobile terminals, 5G technologies and the Internet of Things, and several other directions are pushing each other's technological advances. This is a unique feature of Qualcomm. Of course, the giants in the world of mobile communications and operators of various countries are actively engaged in the research and development of 5G technologies. Only the new technologies we saw with MWC this year are just some of the representatives. In the next few years, the evolution of 5G and even the interconnection of everything will go through the process of quantitative change to qualitative change and will completely change our life.
