Sharp increase in global demand triggers the expansion of methanol

John Floren, senior vice president of Methanex, the world's largest methanol producer, stated at the China International Petroleum and Chemical Congress on September 9th that the use of alternative energy represented by methanol fuel is being implemented. The global expansion has not only promoted the strong growth in global methanol demand, but also triggered various degrees of expansion in the world.

Driven by energy demand, global demand for methanol will continue to grow in the next 3 to 5 years. Holron said that about one-third of the world's methanol is currently used in the energy sector, methanol, gasoline, methanol and gasoline blending, and the use of methanol to produce biodiesel and dimethyl ether and other industries to develop rapidly, especially the application of methanol gasoline in the world, Promoted the continuous development of the methanol industry. The data released by the chemical consultancy Analytech revealed that the global methanol demand increased by 13% in 2010, and the global demand for methanol will increase by more than 19 million tons between 2011 and 2015, with a cumulative average growth rate of 7.3%.

Good prospects for development have led to different degrees of energy expansion around the world. According to Yin Chenjie, chemical information manager of Cangjian Business, by 2015, the global methanol production capacity will reach around 120 million tons, of which China’s production capacity will be approximately 65 million tons and the production capacity outside China will be approximately 55 million tons. Russia will have 980,000 tons of new capacity put into operation. Among them, Russia's Ammoniy's 230,000 t/a methanol project will be put into production in 2015, Ural Methanol Group's 300,000 t/y project will be put into production in 2015, Shchekino 45 The 10,000-ton/year project will be put into production this year. In the Middle East, 2.4 million tons of new capacity has also been put into production. Among them, Iran's Kharg Petrochemical Company's 1.4 million tons of new capacity will be put into production in 2014; Algeria's 1 million tons of new capacity will be put into operation in 2015. In addition, the Pandora Methanol Company's 850,000 tons/year project will be put into operation in 2012, and Azerbaijan Methanol Company (Azmeco)'s 560,000 tons/year project will be put into operation in 2013.

Holron said that due to the long construction period and large capital investment, overall, new capacity will be limited in the next five years and the outlook for supply and demand in the industry will be optimistic. The chemical industry's statistics also show that in the next five years, the global new production capacity will not exceed 10% of the existing total production capacity, and the global supply and demand will remain basically balanced. There will be no large-scale stoppages and serious excesses.
