US "Nimitz" class aircraft carrier completes near-defense weapon system test

The US Navy's Nimitz-class aircraft carrier Roosevelt tested the ship's near-defense weapon system in the Combat Operations System Review ( CSSQT) against the target of a flight towing target. This weapon system test aims to familiarize the crew with the performance of the weapon system and equipment and improve the operational readiness. Participants in the test were the “dense array” system, which was guided by radar. The main gun was a 20 mm 6-tube “volcano” M61 Gatlin gun, and the towed target aircraft flew more than 250 knots.
" The CIWS is the last line of defense against the incoming missiles of the Roosevelt", the CS-4 Division of the "Roosevelt" Aircraft Combat Systems Division. "The test target can mimic incoming missiles. Enables CIWS operators to use and test the capabilities of the equipment for detection, tracking, crossfire, and evaluation.
This type of testing is usually performed before the ship performs the front deployment task. In this test, the ship's fire control personnel use the local and remote control stations to control the CIWS and shoot down the target. “A typical CIWS completes a series of detected crossfire missions that typically last a few minutes,” Butler said. “The last part is tracking-crossfire, which will last 7-20 seconds depending on the target performance.”
