On October 26, Guangxi Guangwei Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. announced that the world's first biomass production system for polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) has been established across the company and qualified polyvinyl alcohol products have been produced. The biggest feature of this technology is that the raw materials can be planted repeatedly, and it has the advantages of low energy consumption, environmental protection, low cost and high quality. It is the world’s technical commanding point in the polyvinyl alcohol and vinyl acetate-ethylene copolymer emulsion (VAE) industry.

The project takes Guangxi's abundant biomass resources such as sugar cane and potato as raw materials, and uses the ethanol-ethylene process to produce polyvinyl alcohol, namely, potato and sugarcane crops → ethanol → ethylene → vinyl acetate → polyvinyl alcohol, and finally obtains polyvinyl alcohol.

The project was named "5105" project, which means that an annual output of 50,000 tons of alcohol to ethylene, 100,000 tons of vinyl acetate, 50,000 tons of polyvinyl alcohol, is a key construction project in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, a total investment of 650 million yuan. At the end of May 2011, the back-end project with an annual output of 50,000 tons of polyvinyl alcohol and its supporting projects were completed; at the end of September this year, the front-end project with an annual output of 50,000 tons of ethylene for ethanol and 100,000 tons of vinyl acetate was completed and put into trial production. After nearly one month of careful debugging, the world’s first production line of biomass for polyvinyl alcohol finally opened up the whole process, forming a complete green chemical recycling industry chain.

It is understood that domestically and globally before the general use of calcium carbide - acetylene production of polyvinyl alcohol, namely, limestone → calcium carbide → acetylene → vinyl acetate → polyvinyl alcohol. This process route has high energy consumption, large pollution, and high cost, especially the intermediate product calcium carbide belongs to the national limited products. The Guangxi Guangwei Chemical Co., Ltd., which was reorganized after the explosion occurred, decided not to take the old road from the beginning of its reconstruction in July 2009, but to develop a green chemical industry that uses biomass to obtain polyvinyl alcohol.

According to Wang Chengmei, general manager of Guangwei Chemical Industry, Guangwei Chemical aimed at the technical commanding heights of the industry and formulated a 10-year development plan for the circular economy of biomass green chemical industry. It plans to build 10 billion yuan in three phases in 10 years. The first phase of the construction task is "5105" project. After 10 years of development, Guangwei Chemical will no longer rely on petroleum resources to make large-scale use of biomass raw materials to produce high-quality fine chemical products. Circular economic indicators such as resource utilization efficiency, resource output efficiency, and waste discharge will be included in the domestic market. Outer peers.
